Microsoft Entra is a comprehensive family of Identity and Access Management (IAM) and network security products. Formerly known as Azure Active Directory (Azure AD), Entra acts as the cloud-based security backbone for Microsoft 365, Azure, and thousands of other SaaS applications. [1, 2, 3, 4]
The Entra product family features several core capabilities designed for Zero Trust security: [1, 2]
  • Entra ID: The foundational identity service (formerly Azure AD) that handles user logins, Single Sign-On (SSO), and Multifactor Authentication (MFA). [1, 2, 3]
  • Entra ID Governance: Automates access requests, assignments, and reviews to ensure employees only have the permissions they actually need. [1, 2]
  • Entra External ID: Manages customer identities for your apps and allows secure collaboration with outside business partners. [1, 2]
  • Entra Private & Internet Access: Network security tools that connect users to corporate apps and the internet securely, without needing traditional, clunky VPNs. [1]
  • Entra Workload ID: Secures access and authentication for non-human identities, such as applications, automated services, and containers. [1]
By consolidating these services, Entra enables IT administrators to establish automated, rule-based “if-then” access policies (Conditional Access) based on user location, device compliance, and sign-in risk
