Why it matters

One standard. Every system that touches card data.

The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) applies to any business that accepts, stores, processes or transmits payment card data. Version 4.0.1 is the current standard, and every requirement in it has been mandatory since March 31, 2025.

Required by your card agreements

PCI DSS is enforced through the card brands and your payment processor. Your merchant agreement requires you to comply and to validate it every year.

Scope drives the work

Every device and network that can reach card data is in scope. Reducing where card data lives is often the fastest way to cut cost and effort.

Gaps carry real risk

A breach or failed validation can lead to fees from your processor, liability for fraud losses and, in serious cases, losing the ability to accept cards.

The requirements

What PCI DSS v4.0.1 expects

Network security controls

Firewalls and segmentation that keep card systems separate from everything else.

Protect stored card data

Store only what you need, and make stored card numbers unreadable.

Encryption in transit

Strong encryption whenever card data crosses open or public networks.

Malware protection and patching

Anti-malware and timely security updates on every in-scope system.

Access control and MFA

Unique accounts, least-privilege access and multi-factor authentication into card systems.

Logging and monitoring

Logs reviewed regularly to show who accessed card systems, and when.

Vulnerability scans and testing

Quarterly vulnerability scans, penetration testing and fixes for what they find.

Payment page security

Monitoring for unauthorized scripts and changes on e-commerce payment pages.

Getting started

Four steps to confidence

1

Scoping call

We learn how you accept cards and where card data goes.

2

Gap assessment

Findings mapped to PCI DSS v4.0.1.

3

Remediation plan

A prioritized plan with timelines and owners.

4

Ongoing management

Compliance maintained year-round, not just at validation time.

Questions

Common PCI DSS questions

Is PCI DSS a law?

No. It is a security standard set by the PCI Security Standards Council and enforced through your agreements with the card brands and your payment processor.

Which Self-Assessment Questionnaire do we need?

It depends on how you accept cards and your transaction volume. Your processor sets your validation requirements, and we help you identify the right SAQ and complete it.

If we use a payment processor, are we already compliant?

Using a validated processor reduces your scope, but it does not remove your responsibilities. Your network, devices, staff and website can all still be in scope.

Can Tech Hero sign off on our compliance?

Formal Reports on Compliance are completed by a Qualified Security Assessor. We prepare your environment, fix gaps and work alongside your assessor, and we support the self-assessment for businesses that qualify for one.
